2006 Hui Laulima Awards Luncheon & Conference

On May 19, 2006 Hui Laulima held its annual Awards Luncheon & Conference at the King Kamehameha Hotel Ballroom.

Keynote Speaker:
Billy Kenoi

Anthony "Tony" Dias
Adult Awardee

St Michael's Confirmation Class Youth Group Awardee

The 2005-2006 St. Michael's Confirmation Class received the Youth Group Award for participating in The Catholic Campaign for Human Dev.  An annual National Media Contest is held which they decided to enter.  Comprised of 10 teenagers ages 15-16 the focus of their video was Homelessness in West Hawaii.  The students got out of the classroom, away from the parish and into the world of the homeless and poor-into the social and political structures that maintain poverty and destroy the integrity of the human being

Tony has been an outstanding volunteer for 15 years in West Hawaii.  He's started the Hispanic music group and volunteers with Catholic Charities Immigrant Services at St. Michael's Church.  He's a dedicated member to both the Lion's Club and OLAH – Org. for Latin Americans in Hawaii as well as others.  He as overcome many obstacles throughout his life.  Being a cancer survivor is one of those many obstacles.  Still battling with personal health issues, Tony still finds time to give back to his community as well as teaching respect and the importance of family unity within his own family.

Conference Highlights included revisiting our Guiding Principles of LAULIMA:

Lend a Hand
Accept Responsibility
Unite in Harmony
Learn from each other
Instill Pride
Manage effectively
Appreciate one's efforts

Attendees broke out into 7 groups using an acronym of LAULIMA and conversed about what types of behavioral actions does each acronym have that we can describe as a Hui Member, Community Member and as a Service provider.  By creating these actions we will be able to start a ripple effect of LAULIMA within the bigger community.

Hui Laulima Award

Goal:

To recognize one adult, one adult group, one youth, & one youth group of the West Hawaii Community who have demonstrated one or more of the following:

v Significant and ongoing/long term contribution to the youth of Kona

v Demonstrated leadership, outstanding citizenship, and serves as a model community member

v Overcame a handicap/major obstacle in life with persistence/determination and good humor

v Significant and long term contribution to the Kona community

Background:

As a growing community, there are a number of adults, adult groups, youth, and youth groups who have, over the years, made significant contributions to make their community a better place to live and work.  As our community continues to grow it is expected that many more will come forward and strive to make our community a place we can all be proud of.

These "unsung heroes" have received little, if any recognition for their dedication, leadership, and unselfish contributions to the community.

This award will attempt to fill the void and recognize deserving individuals and groups.
