Parent Education Class Background The Neighborhood Place of Kona (NPK) focuses on the welfare of children and families. Ke Ala Kupono (Path to Rightness), a set of guiding principles for NPK, and is comprised of the following values, attitudes and concepts: Ho'omana (spirituality); Malama o ke Ola (caring for life); Lokahi (harmony/balance); Laulima (working together); Ho'oponopono (to make right); Kukakuka (respectful discussion); Ho'ihi aku ho ihi mai (mutual respect) and Ha'aha'a (humbleness). These ideas reflect a universal message, which acts as a guide for everyday living. The concepts relates to what the Hawaiians believed to be a code of conduct called Pono. About the Parent Education Class The parent education class introduces 6 concepts from Ke Ala Kupono, and focuses on the important responsibility that parent(s) have in teaching and role modeling proper values and behavior to their children. These concepts express a universal message, which act as a guide for every day living. Hawaiian culture is used as the primary vehicle of instruction and presented in a "story telling" manner. Classes are small non-judgmental, inter-active and voluntary. Classes are held once per week for six weeks and last one and a half hour. A Certificate of Completion is awarded for those that attend and participate in each class. This class is recognized by the West Hawaii Family Court and DHS- West Hawaii Child Welfare Service Section.
